Ancient Greek in Tables and Schemata

Project Aims

The goal of the proposed project is to elaborate different kinds of tables and schemata illustrating Greek grammatical issues in order to facilitate the beginners of Ancient Greek by providing them with a systematically organized reader of Ancient Greek.

The demand of such a handbook is provoked by the peculiarity of teaching Ancient Greek to students of non-classical departments who are obliged to promote in this difficult linguistic area in the shortest time. This peculiarity assumes the application of summarized and visual forms of presenting the grammar material. Therefore, the tables in question, which would not exceed the number of twenty, will be of help for an easier approach to the Greek grammar.

The authors’ intention is to propose tables and schemata which cover the following grammatical issues

  • 1.Phonetics:
    pronunciation (schema);
    accent, enclitics, and proclitics (schema);
    phonetic changes in morpheme boundaries (table).
  • Morphology
    declensions of nouns and adjectives: general table; third declension – types of stems and peculiarities of endings (table);
    declensions of pronouns (table);
    comparison forms of adjectives (table);
    correlative pronominal adverbs (table);
    verbal system (schema);
    primary and secondary endings of the verb (table);
    first conjugation (table);
    second conjugation (table);
    different types of aorist tense (schema);
    dialect forms of endings including Homeric (table).
  • Syntax:
    functions of cases (schema);
    prepositions: o local sense (schema); metaphoric sense (table);
    modality – use of the moods (schema);
    different kinds of subordinate clauses (table);
    particles (table).

Stages and dead-lines

  • Discussion about the structure of the handbook and preparation of a final version of the group proposal: 15.11. 2005.
  • Elaborating of a detailed contents of the handbook according to the different grammatical categories: 01.01.2006.
  • Elaborating of the tables illustrating the phonetic issues: 01.03.2006.
  • Elaborating of the tables illustrating the morphology of nouns and invariable parts of speech 01.09.2006.
  • Discussion over the prepared part of the handbook during the second contact session: 01.10.2006.
